Uniontown City Council has selected an outside hire as Uniontown’s new chief of police.

Demarcus Weems will assume his position as the head of the Uniontown Police Department at a yet-to-be-announced date.

Weems is currently the police chief of Mosses, Alabama, a town in Lowndes County, with a population of 1,029 as of 2018.

Weems graduated from George Washington Carver High
School in 2000 and went on to earn his Bachelors degree in Broadcast Journalism and Public Relations from Troy University. After graduating from the Montgomery Police Academy in 2014, he secured a position as a Police Officer/School Resource Officer with the Wetumpka Police Department. He returned to his alma mater to earn his Masters degree in Criminal Justice, 2016. He is currently working on his PHD in Organizational Leadership at UAB!

Mayor Jones stated “He will bring experience from several angles that will not only enhance the police department, it will provide officers trainings on investigations, court preparation and community policing.”

The search for police chief was several months to ensure the citizens get the best candidate. The city had 5 applicants, 5 interviews and narrowed it down to Demarcus Weems. Councilwoman Kimberly Bell, who is the police department committee chairwoman stated, “She is willing to work with the new chief to secure the saftey of our citizens and is looking forward to getting out to the public to ensure quality city services.”

The council decided to give the chief a 3 year contract, with a 90 day probation. They ask for proof of residency and to see the contract before signing.

Weems wasn’t present at the meeting due to the Alabama Chief conference happening in Orange Beach, Alabama this week. On being the new chief, “my number one priority, aside from getting to know the community, is hiring more officers.” Currently, the department is about 7 officers short of where it should be. “I am excited about being apart of the community and ready to start working towards building strong relationship with the citizens.” stated Weems.

The City of Uniontown looks forward to having him and moving forward in the right direction.
